Video #19 - Obedience is the Very Best Way

In the military, the word “Command” refers to the authority that a person lawfully exercises over their subordinates by virtue of his or her rank and position.  The purpose of that command is to influence others to accomplish the mission by providing purpose, direction and appropriate motivation.

Although the subordinate may not understand or agree with the command, he or she is to follow their orders to the letter, trusting that their commander not only sees a bigger picture (the ultimate mission) but also has a plan and purpose.

God is our commander-in-chief and we will stand before Him someday to answer for our actions – did we follow His orders or not (2 Cor. 5:10; Eccl. 12:14; Rom. 14:11-12)?

In Psalm 19:8, David reminds us that “the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.”  The word David uses for “commandment” here literally means “words of wisdom.”

  • God’s Word gives us God’s commands for life, but God is not blindly moving pawns around on a chessboard just to get His jollies.
  • He has a plan and a purpose for your life, a mission for you if you will.
  • In His great wisdom, He instructs you in the task He has called you to.  You see, “With God are wisdom and might; he has counsel and understanding” (Job 12:13).  God’s “wisdom is profound, His power is vast” (Job 9:4 NIV 1984).  We can trust that He knows what He’s doing! As His subordinate, I may not know what His plan is, I may not know why He’s asking ... or demanding that I do something - but I don’t need to know. I just need to go!

In earlier years, before technology enhanced the ability of armies to communicate with each other, a courier would be dispatched with written orders.  Once received, the written command was to be completed.  If the orders were not followed, if the senior officer on the field disregarded the command in favor of his own plan, he might win the skirmish but the battle could be in jeopardy.

In a sense, that’s what our Bible is - written orders from our Commander in Chief, God Himself.  These commands are not to be taken lightly; they are to be followed.  They’re not up for our own personal interpretation, they are words of wisdom from the One who sees the whole battlefield and understands the movements of the enemy.

In our battle against sexual impurity, our commander has given us marching orders.  He has told us how to fight (Jas. 4:7), how to stand (1 Cor. 16:13; Gal. 5:1; Eph. 6:13), and what weapon to use (Eph. 6:17).  Ours is not to question His command or doubt His wisdom.  Ours is not to try to figure out how on earth that particular method or that specific weapon is going to work when everything else we tried failed.  The responsibility that falls upon us as soldiers of Christ is to obey.

God’s commands are pure.  They are clean, without error, without deceit, without an ulterior motive.  Follow them and one day you may see the bigger picture as your spiritual eyes begin to see what He is doing in your life.
